The Secret Sauce to BLK & Bold's First At-Home Barista Challenge Winner

At BLK & Bold, we are passionate about how people enjoy their coffee experience at home, which is why we started the At-Home Barista Challenge. Not only did we want to emphasize the enjoyment of a daily routine and what could be a self care ritual, we also wanted to encourage our coffee community to explore new ideas and recipes. Whether you prefer a classic drip or a latte with all the fixings, your coffee experience at home is a time to insert joy into your day. This was a way for people to share their favorite coffee recipes as we continue to grow our community!

After sorting through the delicious submissions we are excited to recognize our FIRST At-Home Barista Challenge winner: Kay. (@kay.shanelle)! 

Here's a little about our winner Kay and of course, the winning recipe! 

Q:  How do you come up with the winning recipe and what’s the tea on making the perfect coffee ice cubes? 

A: Don’t over complicate things! Pick a delicious brew, choose a flavor profile, make it pretty! 

The perfect coffee ice cubes require unique ice trays and an unsweetened cold brew. I think unsweetened cubes freeze better and prevent separation.

Q:  What is your favorite BLK & Bold coffee? What do you like about the profile?

A: My favorite BLK & Bold coffee has to be the Brighter Days Light Roast blend. I love light roast coffee for the morning perk! Brighter Days has great notes of toffee and fruit. I love drinking this blend before work or on weekends before running errands.

Q: What is the best type of coffee drink to make at home? Got any tips? 

A: I think it’s easiest to make cold coffee drinks look pretty but to be honest my go to is a warm caramel macchiato with oat milk! My tip is to always use high quality coffee and to not make it too sweet. Sweeteners can overpower the taste of the coffee.

Q: When did your love of coffee start?

A: My love of coffee started when I was in high school. My dad has always taken his coffee seriously and my love grew from his!

Here’s the recipe to her delicious recipe: Kay’s BOLD Iced Dark Chocolate Mocha 

Ingredients and Directions: 

  1. Swirl Torani Dark Chocolate Puremade Sauce around a glass. 
  2. Fill a glass with frozen coffee cubes.
  3. Brew a double shot of BLK & Bold Brighter Days.
  4. Sweeten coffee to your liking. 
  5. In a separate glass, combine Unsweetened Oat Milk with (1) tbsp of Torani Dark Chocolate Puremade sauce. 
  6. Add dark chocolate oat milk mixture to coffee.
  7. Top Coffee with additional frothed oatmilk if desired. 
  8. ENJOY!
